Visual Signature vs Digital Signature: What Is the Difference?
Understand the difference between placing a visible signature image on a PDF and applying a certificate-backed digital signature.
The word 'signature' is used for several different PDF workflows. Typing your name, drawing a mark or placing an image creates a visible signature appearance. A cryptographic digital signature is different: it uses a certificate and mathematical verification so a PDF reader can validate the signature and detect certain changes after signing. Choosing the right method depends on what the recipient requires.
What a visual signature does
A visual signature places a mark on the page so the document looks signed. The mark might be typed text, a drawing or an uploaded image. It can be appropriate when the recipient simply needs a visible acknowledgement and accepts that method.
A visual mark by itself does not prove who placed it. Someone who can edit a PDF can potentially insert an image that looks like a signature.
What a cryptographic digital signature adds
A certificate-backed digital signature uses cryptography and a signing certificate. Compatible PDF software can use that information to validate the certificate and indicate whether covered document content changed after signing.
Digital signatures can involve identity validation, certificate authorities, hardware tokens, organization policies and jurisdiction-specific requirements. They should not be described as equivalent to adding a signature picture.
Which one should you use?
Start with the recipient's instructions. If a government portal, bank, employer or contract workflow requires a digital certificate, a visual signature is not a substitute. If the form simply asks for a signature and accepts drawn or uploaded marks, a visual signature may be sufficient.
For legally important documents, consider professional advice about the required signing method in the relevant jurisdiction. PDF software can help apply a mark, but it cannot decide whether that mark satisfies a legal or contractual requirement.

Protect your signature image
A scanned signature image can be sensitive because it may be reused outside the original document. Store it carefully and avoid uploading it to services you do not trust. When possible, create the signature in the browser only for the document you are working on.
Local browser processing can reduce the need to send the source PDF to a remote processing server, but your own device and browser still need to be secure.
